On the third “China Space Day” occurring on April 24, Shaanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission and Northwestern Polytechnical University jointly issued “Shaanxi I” Satellite Constellation Project, which is to be accomplished in three stages with the establishment of a satellite network of 256 satellites, thus realizing high-frequency remote sensing monitoring of Shaanxi and the whole “Belt & Road” Region. The project will provide real time detailed visual image information for territorial resources survey, urban planning, environment monitoring, disaster warning, and agricultural and forestry needs.
A Cubesat is a type of miniature satellite of low cost built according to the general international standards. The volume of a 1U-Cubesat is 10cm×10cm×10cm, based on which varied loadings can be outfitted according to different needs. With the traits of high degree of standardization, low cost, and small volume, Cubesats have become the trend for the development of miniature satellites.
The “Shaanxi I” Satellite Constellation Project will be led by NPU and Xi’an Aoxiang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd for its development. According to the schedule, the guiding satellites for the project--- “Xi’an I-A”, and “Xi’an I-B”, will be launched in June 2019, aiming to monitor the haze, pollution of water resources in Shaanxi in an all-round way, so as to provide data support for Xi’an’s vigorous efforts to eliminate haze.
The “Shaanxi I” Satellite Constellation Project will effectively promote the commercialization of the research findings of the cubesat technology, and guide the industries of new materials, intelligent manufacturing, and big data in Shaanxi Province, thus forming a complete industrial chain of satellite designing, manufacturing, testing, experimenting, application and service, and propelling the development of commercial space industry of Shaanxi.
Dr. Zhou Jun, NPU Professor and President of Xi’an Aoxiang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd, said, “the company will combine the superior resources of satellite launching, communications, monitoring and controlling in Shaanxi together. The annual productivity of cubesats will reach 200 in the future.”
