Prof. Mario J. Molina and Prof. Shuji Nakamura, Nobel Prize Laureates, Appointed as Honorary Professors of NPU

On October 12, NPU held the appointment ceremony of honorary professors in the Second Conference Room of the International Conference Center. Nobel Prize Laureates in chemistry 1995 Mario Molina and Nobel Prize Laureates in physics 2014 Shuji Nakamura were appointed as the honorary professors of Northwestern Polytechnical University.

On behalf of NPU, President Wang Jinsong firstly extended a warm welcome to the two great scholars’ visit during the 80thanniversary of NPU. He said that professor Molina and professor Nakamura have profound academic attainments and fruitful academic achievements and both of them are world-renowned scholars.NPU always regarded high-level talents as the prime resource of university development. And NPU sincerely invites well-known scholars all over the world to participate in NPU. So far, the number of Nobel Prize Laureates of NPU honorary professors has been over two digits. In addition, NPU hopes to use the appointment as an opportunity and treasure it as well as invite two scholars to give academic forums to help to broaden the international horizon and enlighten the scientific ideas of students and teachers.

Mario Molina said that he was honored to be the honorary professor of Northwestern Polytechnical University, "With the development of the society and the progress of centuries, diversification, multi-approach and digital technology provides conditions for the generation of new science and technology. Nevertheless, we should not ignore that part of the technology inevitably caused environmental problems. Also we can't avoid facing the huge challenge to the environment.", Prof. Molina said, "Fortunately, our research has played a positive role in curbing environmental degradation and we hope that through our joint efforts, our environment can be improved and benefits all mankind."

Then Shuji Nakamura said it was his first visit to Xi 'an. He found that China's economy is growing rapidly and Chinese companies are becoming more competitive in the global market. He pointed out that he was willing to cooperate with universities and LED technology companies in China closely and deeply. In addition, he hopes to share his experiences with students and integrate some of his ideas with the conception of the education of university.

Zhang Weihong, the vice President of NPU, promised that NPU will devote itself to promoting the collaboration and cooperation between NPU and the two scholars as well as the cooperation with the world's high-level universities and research institutes.

After the free discussion, Prof. Wang Jinsong, President of NPU conferred the certificate of honorary professors to Prof. Mario Molina and Prof. Nakamura.
