“The fragrance of zongzi fills the kitchen; the fragrance of wormwood fills the hall. A peach branch inserted on the door and outside is a stretch of yellow wheat. What an atmosphere of Dragon Boat Festival.”
Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by Chinese to prevent disease and pursue good health, which embodies people’s anticipations for peace and harmony. In order to welcome the festival, appeal to international students to learn Chinese culture and customs, and enrich their extracurricular life during the epidemic period, the International College of NPU held an online culture and custom education event with the theme of “Celebrating Dragon Boat Festival and enjoying well-being together” from June 17 to 23, 2020, which was actively participated by more than 300 international students.
The event is divided into two sections. In the first section, the International College posted two articles on the origin, legend and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival through WeChat platform, guiding international students to further understand the cultural and historical background, traditional customs and various ways of celebration. After learning the relevant knowledge, international students participated an online contest on WeChat platform, which also examined their awareness of epidemic prevention during the festival holiday. In the end, the International College presented Dragon Boat Festival sachets and colorful strings to the outstanding students in the event.
Haris Haider, an international student from Pakistan, won the first place in this knowledge contest. He said that, in the context of epidemic and Dragon Boat Festival, this event was of great educational significance, and the form of online contest was also very interesting. He hoped that more similar activities would be held in the future, so that international students could learn more about Chinese culture.
The event of the Dragon Boat Festival is one of the culture and custom education activities carried out by the International College for international students of NPU. It is also a part of management as well as humanistic care of international students during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of press time, the international students registered in our university are all in good health. During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the International College will continue to pay attention to the physical health of the teachers and students, so as to realize the good wishes of enjoying well-being together.
