Bai Yansong, a presenter and commentator with China Media Group, visited Northwestern Polytechnical University on June 4 for the university’s Aoxiang Lecture Series, sharing his views on reading, growth and the all-round development of young people.
Speaking to more than 1,200 teachers and students, Bai began with his own reading experience, recalling how Selected Misty Poems opened a new world of expression for him at the age of 18. He said poetry is never far from science, noting that the names of China’s space programs, from Tiangong and Shenzhou to Yutu, all carry the romance of ancient imagination.
Bai also discussed moral character, intelligence, physical strength, aesthetics and labor. He encouraged NPU students to become people with a sense of mission, use knowledge through action, develop resilience through sports, pursue higher standards of beauty in technology and life, and gain real inspiration through hands-on practice.
The lecture ended with a moving moment, as Bai gave a bouquet of flowers to a student who said she lacked confidence. The student later shared the flowers with others, passing on his encouragement.
