From August 17 to 22, 2026, the 28th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2026) was held in Lyon, France. During the conference, the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) formally announced its 2026 class of Fellows, with only 15 researchers worldwide receiving the distinction. Professor Wang Qi of NPU’s School of Artificial and Intelligence, OPtics and Electronics was elected an IAPR Fellow for his contributions to cross-domain image analysis and for his service to the IAPR.
About Professor Wang Qi
Wang Qi is a professor and doctoral supervisor at NPU and dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence, Optics and Electronics (iOPEN). His research spans pattern recognition, computer vision and machine learning, with a focus on practical applications involving the analysis and understanding of images, video and large-scale data.
Professor Wang has been recognized as a national-level leading talent and a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher. He is also a Fellow of both the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. His honors include the First Prize of the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Natural Science Award the First Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, the First Prize of the Natural Science Basic Research Program of Shaanxi, the Young Scientists Award of the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation, and Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in Higher Education. Professor Wang serves on the editorial boards of several leading international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He is also a member of the management expert panel for the Ministry of Science and Technology’s “New Generation of Artificial Intelligence” Major Project and serves on an expert panel in the defense sector. His research outcomes have been demonstrated in several major national projects, helping resolve a range of technical challenges and generating positive social and economic benefits.
About IAPR
The International Association for Pattern Recognition(IAPR) is a globally influential academic organization in the field of pattern recognition. Introduced in 1994, the IAPR Fellow Award is one of the Association’s major honors for distinguished researchers. It is conferred biennially through a highly selective process, recognizing outstanding contributions to the theoretical foundations and technological advancement of pattern recognition, as well as to the development of IAPR and service to the academic community.
Under IAPR’s bylaws, the number of Fellows elected in each biennial cycle may not exceed 0.25 percent of its total membership. Election as an IAPR Fellow therefore represents significant international recognition of a researcher’s scientific achievements and professional service.
