Putting Knowledge into Practice, Staying Safe in China: International College Holds Safety Orientation for New International Students

2026-09-11 18:20

To enhance international students’ safety awareness and legal literacy and help them better adapt to their studies and daily lives in China, the International College of Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) carefully planned and organized a series of engaging and diverse safety education activities on August 27. Covering traffic safety, financial security, immigration laws and regulations, and a Mid-Autumn Festival food experience, the program offered international students a vivid and practical lesson in life in China through a full day of practical and interactive activities.

In the morning, the International College invited police officers from the Xi’an Traffic Police Brigade to campus to deliver a special lecture on traffic safety. Addressing international students’ unfamiliarity with Chinese traffic regulations and differences in driving habits, the officers used typical traffic accident cases and a series of impactful safety education videos to illustrate the serious consequences of violations such as drunk driving, driving under the influence, and running red lights.

The real-life accident scenes shown in the videos left a deep impression on the students, helping them realize that obeying traffic rules is not only a matter of respecting the law, but also a responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others.

To make the session more interactive and immersive, the lecture also included a simulated drunk-driving experience. Several international students volunteered to take part, putting on special goggles designed to simulate the visual effects of intoxication and attempting to walk along designated markings on the floor. With blurred vision and impaired balance, the participants struggled to walk steadily, drawing surprised reactions from the audience. This immersive experience enabled the students to experience firsthand the serious impact of alcohol on driving ability. Many expressed their determination to firmly reject drunk driving and to become responsible practitioners and advocates of safe and civilized transportation.

In the afternoon, the program continued with a special lecture on financial security delivered by staff members from the Bank of China. Focusing on key topics such as preventing online fraud, guarding against illegal currency exchange, and protecting personal property, the banking professionals analyzed real cases and explained common scams targeting international students, including fraudulent calls impersonating embassies and consulates, illegal currency exchange schemes, and phishing emails. The banking professionals reminded students to safeguard their personal and financial information, avoid trusting unfamiliar links or transfer requests, and promptly contact the police or seek assistance from NPU if they encountered suspicious situations.

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, a warm and lively mooncake-making activity followed the financial security lecture. Under the guidance of teachers, the international students made delicate snow-skin mooncakes decorated with beautiful patterns. Through this hands-on experience, they gained a deeper understanding of the traditional Chinese cultural values of reunion and harmony.

Later, police officer Cui Jiu from the Exit and Entry Administration of the Xi’an Public Security Bureau was invited to deliver a special presentation on important matters for international students living in China and relevant laws and regulations. The officer systematically introduced regulations concerning the administration of foreigners’ entry into and exit from China, procedures for visa extensions, the legal definition of illegal employment, and public security administration regulations relevant to daily life. He particularly emphasized that international students must ensure the continued validity of their passports and visas, strictly comply with Chinese laws and regulations, and observe social norms during their stay in China. The session provided clear guidance to help international students study and live in China safely and in accordance with the law.
