To enhance the information literacy and resource utilization skills of newly enrolled international students, the Library organized a library orientation program for more than 200 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from the International College on September 3. Coordinated and led by Ms. Niu Yue, Director of the Reader Services Center, the program combined a themed lecture with an on-site exploration tour. It provided the new students with a comprehensive introduction to the Library’s resources, spaces, and services, offering them a systematic, practical, and informative “first lesson” on making the most of the Library.
01 Library Orientation Lecture: A Complete Guide to Using the Library

At 10:00 a.m., the library orientation lecture for inew international students for 2026 was held in the lecture hall. Taking “Library Overview,” “Spaces and Services,” and “Information Literacy Training” as its three main themes, Niu Yue provided students with a systematic and comprehensive guide to the Library.

To help the new students adapt more quickly to NPU’s academic environment, Niu Yue first introduced the Library’s basic services, including the functional layout of each floor, borrowing procedures, access to electronic resources, and how to reserve study spaces. The introduction helped students gain a clear and practical understanding of how to use the Library and addressed common difficulties international students may encounter when accessing its services. To support students’ research and academic needs, she also introduced key Chinese and international academic databases and methods for literature retrieval. Through practical examples and demonstrations, she explained techniques for information processing and academic research, providing graduate students in particular with valuable tools for their future research.
The lecture was closely tailored to the international students’ everyday learning needs while also addressing the demands of academic research. The students listened attentively and actively participated in the discussion. From the practical use of international databases to methods of remote access, Niu answered their questions one by one, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere and laying a solid foundation for their future studies and research.
02 An In-Depth Library Tour: Discovering the Library’s Unique Charm
Following the lecture, the new international students took an extensive guided tour of the Library under the guidance of librarians Guo Qing, Xie Yuan, Cao Le, and others. They visited distinctive spaces and collections, including the exhibition area featuring historical library artifacts, the Scholars’ Collection, and the Cloud Book Pavilion. The tour introduced the students to the Library’s multifunctional learning spaces, special collections, and intelligent service facilities, allowing them to experience firsthand the diverse services and rich academic atmosphere of a modern university library. The experience further sparked their interest in academic exploration and the discovery of knowledge.

During the interactive session, volunteers Yu Sicheng and Pan Jingru guided the students to the self-service borrowing and return area, where they demonstrated the procedures for borrowing and returning books. They also provided hands-on guidance on common topics introduced during the lecture, including book searches, borrowing regulations, and space reservations.By combining theoretical instruction with practical experience, the program helped the international freshmen become familiar with the Library’s resources and services, providing greater convenience for their future studies and research.
After the visit, many students said that the program had given them a more comprehensive understanding of the Library’s resources, spaces, and services. Some students also wrote messages expressing their expectations for studying and living in China, noting that they looked forward to visiting the Library more often and making full use of its collections and services in the future.
