NPU Alumnus Mi Chunting Honored with the 2027 IEEE Transportation Technologies Award

2026-10-06 18:25

On September 22 local time, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) officially announced the recipients of the 2027 Technical Field Awards. Mi Chunting, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at San Diego State University and an alumnus of School of Automation at Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), where he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees, was honored with the 2027 IEEE Transportation Technologies Award for "contributions to advancing electric and hybrid electric vehicle technologies." The award ceremony will be held on May 5, 2027, during IEEE Awards Week.

The IEEE Technical Field Awards are important annual awards established by IEEE for the global engineering and technology community. Each year, the IEEE Awards Board selects recipients through a rigorous peer-review process, aiming to recognize researchers, innovators, and collaborative teams that have had a profound impact on global science, engineering, and social development.

The IEEE Transportation Technologies Award is jointly sponsored by seven professional societies—the IEEE Industry Applications Society, Industrial Electronics Society, Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, Microwave Theory and Technology Society, Power Electronics Society, Power and Energy Society, and Vehicular Technology Society. It is awarded to no more than three individuals or teams in each award cycle and is a widely recognized heavyweight technical award in the field of transportation engineering.

Mi Chunting completed his bachelor's and master's degree studies at NPU, where he received systematic and rigorous training in electrical machinery and electrical engineering, laying a solid professional foundation. In 2001, Mi Chunting received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada. Since 2015, he has been with San Diego State University, where he is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Over the years, he has focused on power electronics, wireless power transfer, battery management systems, and electric and hybrid electric vehicle technologies, making significant contributions to the fields of electric vehicles, power electronics, and sustainable energy systems.
