Northwestern Polytechnical University, an engineering school headquartered in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, Northwest China, recently offered an elective cooking course to boost its students’ personal growth and development.
Students learn Chinese cooking techniques during the elective course.
The students' cooking course was divided into two parts: cooking theory and a practical course.
The culinary theory course integrated Chinese culinary culture, history, skills and common sense, and helped students to understand Chinese culinary techniques and enhance their cultural confidence.
And of course, hands-on operation was indispensable during the practice class, which was also the most interesting part for students. Each step was demonstrated and guided by a professional chef.
“I'm not good at cooking so I actively applied for this course," said a student named Jin Hongru. "During class, I learned a lot of practical kitchen tips. I am looking forward to sharing them with my family during the holiday.”
Another student, Deng Yaxin, said that the most difficult part of making "tomato fish", once they learned to cook the dish, was cutting the fish fillets. It was hard to master the strength and angle.
“After cooking, I had a taste of our dishes and I felt satisfied with my work,” Deng said with a smile.
During this semester's course, the students will also explore the cooking methods required to make raincoat cucumber, double-cooked pork, cola chicken wings, steamed buns and Shaanxi stew.
As a science and engineering school, the university offers cooking courses aimed at educating students through labor and enriching its students' lives outside the classroom.
"The main purpose of the course is to popularize Chinese cooking techniques among college students, enhance their cultural confidence, and guide students to love and advocate labor," a teacher said.
"Considering the number of equipment sets, teaching quality and operation safety, we opened 20 classes in the early stages, and opened the course to all undergraduates based on their eagerness. Finally we selected the students according to their enthusiasm. Later, we will increase the number of courses to meet the needs of more students," the teacher added.
