China's biomimetic robot dives up to 1,025 meters in test swim

XI'AN, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers in Northwestern Polytechnical University have accomplished a test swim of a biomimetic robot in the shape of a manta ray, or devilfish, that can flap its wings and slide underwater at China's Xisha Islands in the South China Sea.

The 470-kilo bionic soft robot prototype modelled on the shape and motion of a manta ray, one of nature's most efficient swimmers, can dive up to 1,025 meters.

Manta rays possess a unique propulsion mechanism with characteristics such as high propulsion efficiency, high mobility and stability, low noise and large load capacity.

The robot has already been used for observing the ocean environment and conducting submarine scientific investigations in a major coral reef in the Xisha Islands.
