2022 SPHERIC Xi’an International Workshop Successfully Held

2022-04-11 15:34

2022 Xi’an SPHERIC International Workshop, organized by the Institute for Computational Mechanics and Its Applications, School of Aeronautics, Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU-ICMA) and Acta Mechanica Sinica (AMS), was held simultaneously online and onsite at theAoxiang International Convention Center on March 28 to April 2.

The conference was being held for six days, with three conference presentations by top experts and three scientific training presentations by outstanding young scholars from both China and overseas. There were 14 sessions with more than 120 participants from China, Japan, UK, tUSA, France, Germany, Italy and Australia. The conference is an academic event in the meshless field with the latest achievements of the theoretical and applied research on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and its related particle methods.

The conference started at 8:30 a.m. on March 30 and was presided over by Prof. Fei Xu, the conference chairman. Prof. Fuli Zhang, Director of International Cooperation Office of Northwestern Polytechnical University, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Prof. Renato Vacondio, Chairman of SPHERIC, highly appreciated all the work of the conference organizers on behalf of the SPHERIC Scientific Committee. After theopening ceremony, the participants completed a group photo in the clouds together.

The day before the official opening of the conference (March 29), Dr. Chi Zhang from the Technical University of Munich, Associate Professor Pengnan Sun from Sun Yat-sen University, Associate Professor Zhe Ji from Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Altair Software were invited to conduct a one-day scientific lecture and hands-on training for graduate students in the SPH direction. During the three days of the formal seminar, Prof. Dongdong Wang from Xiamen University, Prof. Lin Fu from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Prof. Ha Bui from Monash University, Australia, delivered excellent keynote presentations. A total of 53 oral presentations on 14 different topics were arranged. PhD students and young scholars of many universities from both China and overseas presented and shared their research results and academic experiences, and together with the delegates, they conducted a lively and intense academic discussion for three days. This workshop was supported by AMS, and a special issue of AMS was set up to publish the excellent workshop papers. The International Workshop was successfully completed at 19:00 on April 1.

SPHERIC (the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics rEsearch and engineeRing International Community) Workshop, is a high level international academic conference in the field of computational mechanics, aiming to facilitate communication and cooperation among SPH researchers worldwide, encourage interdisciplinary research on SPH methods and related particle methods, and promote the wide application of related methods.SPHERIC International Workshop was introduced into China by Prof. Moubin Liu from Peking University and the first workshop in China was successfully held at Peking University in 2017. Subsequently, Prof. Aman Zhang of Harbin Engineering University organized the second SPHERIC workshop in 2020.

SPHERIC International Workshop is held once every two years in China, and this conference is the third one, which has received wide attention and support from scholars at home and abroad. The conference was supported by the International Cooperation Office of Northwestern Polytechnical University, theInstitute of Extreme Mechanics (IEM) and the Joint International Research Laboratory of Impact Dynamics and its Engineering Application of Shaanxi Province. Organizing this workshop helped to improve our research level in the field of computational mechanics, promote the development of related subjects, and expand the influence of our scientific achievements. The successful organization of such a high-level international academic conference also indicates that the research level of our university in related disciplines has been paid attention to and recognized by the domestic and international researchers.
