On September 25, 2022, at the invitation of QMES, Professor Shang Rui of the University of Tokyo did an exchange with students of QMES based on his own scientific research experience and feelings, and put forward valuable suggestions for the future learning plan to students, with a view to enhancing the students’ scientific research ability, career competitiveness and global competence.

Professor Shang Rui studied for a joint doctoral degree at the University of Tokyo from 2012 to 2014 and received his Doctorate of Science from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2014. He has been an associate professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Tokyo since 2020. Professor Shang Rui has in-depth research on organic synthetic chemistry, catalysis and molecular technology, and has published more than 60 papers in Science, Nature Catalysis, and many other top international journals. His papers have been cited by others more than 6,000 times.
He mainly discussed his research topics since undergraduate period with students and shared his unforgettable memories and valuable gains on the road of scientific research, which made students not only have a certain understanding of organic synthesis and catalysis but also understand there is still the joy of communicating with people and opening up horizons in scientific research except for boring and tedious experiments. He emphasized that students should have the courage to challenge, dare to innovate, and not be afraid of difficulties and find the joy of scientific research, enjoy the process of exploring the unknown, and affirm their own value during their undergraduate period.

Finally, he gave professional answers to students’ questions about studying abroad and how to determine the direction of scientific research, which helped students to clarify their goals for the future and was of great significance for students to do their future development plans.
