On the morning of January 11, QMES held the 2023 Theory-discussing Meeting on Student Affairs. People who attended the meeting included Dai Fuping, Secretary of the QMES Party Committee, Cheng Yin, Deputy Secretary of the QMES Party Committee, full-time and part-time counsellors of each grade and all the staff of the Student Affairs Office. The meeting was presided over by Cheng Yin.
The meeting focused on student affairs in the new academic year. The full-time and part-time counsellors of each grade and all the staff of the Student Affairs Office considered the existing problems and various special tasks and reported the planning for students' development in the next semester. Participants conducted in-depth discussions on the Party construction, graduation, employment, higher education, assistance for students with difficulties, construction of counsellor teams, scholarship evaluation, psychological counselling for students and other topics. In view of problems encountered by different grades, the teachers made detailed analyses of the new situation and new challenges of student affairs that they were facing together and put forward many new ideas and new methods based on their respective positions. Later, Cheng Yin made supplementary remarks. She carried out more specific mobilization and deployment for the work of the next semester, covering Party building, ideological and political education, students' academic guidance, students' international development, assistance for students in need of help, innovation and entrepreneurship education, students' career planning, employment, further education and other aspects, requiring that everyone should formulate working goals, clarify working methods, remember the main tasks. Cheng also proposed implementation measures so that the faculty members can contribute to student affairs and promote talent training.
At the end of the meeting, Dai Fuping made a summary speech concerning working requirements and prospects from seven aspects. First, teachers should pay attention to cultivating systematic thinking, learn to think from the overall situation and cooperate with each other. Second, go deeper into reality and get closer to students to carry out various work. Teachers need to communicate with students in a timely manner to grasp the actual situation of students. For example, lectures of the Dean of QMES and the “afternoon tea” activity of the Secretary of the Party Committee of QMES can be carried out to get to know students’ ideological trends and actual needs in a more warm and harmonious way. Third, adhere to the problem-oriented approach to see the essence through the appearance. For example, the employment rate, the enrollment rate and the postgraduate recommendation rate are closely related to each other. It is necessary to ensure the improvement of the overall data rather than the individual data. For the academic problems in different grades, teachers should learn from each other and solve them in time. Fourth, it is necessary to make a clear plan as early as possible for the timeline of the year according to important events and major festivals of the country and the school. Fifth, it is suggested to optimize the organizational structure of the student affairs of QMES on the basis of working efficiently together. For example, open competition can be conducted for some positions of QMES to select talents, maximize the initiative of staff, and further improve work efficiency and quality. Sixth, pay attention to divergent thinking in the work, strengthen parallel thinking in multiple fields, and make full use of existing resources to innovate working methods. For example, combine English learning with the ideological and political class to organize more innovative activities. Seventh, focus on forming the characteristics of QMES. For example, give full play to the role of the “Ideological and Political Class” platform, continue to adhere to the principle of cultivating talents through scientific research and stay committed to the talent cultivation concept of improving the four abilities of students, namely, abilities of “Political Discernment”, “Learning Motivation”, “Innovation and Creativity” and “Global Competency” to create a unique brand of QMES.
The management of student affairs cannot be separated from the dedication and tacit cooperation of all departments. In the new semester, it is hoped that under the guidance of the school’s leader group, we will continue to maintain clear development ideas, innovate work methods, strive to improve the development of students, promote the quality of talent training, and make new contributions to the school’s development and student growth.
