Recently, the high-level men’s badminton team from Northwestern Polytechnical University defeated Peking University 2-0 in the men’s team final of the 25th National College Badminton Championships, winning the national championship again after a five-year hiatus!
The 25th Chinese College Badminton Championships was held at the Chengyang Sports Hall in Qingdao, Shandong. The event was hosted by the Federation of University Sports of China and executed by the Badminton Branch of the Federation of University Sports of China. Over 600 athletes from 47 universities, including Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Jilin University, the University of Hong Kong, and Northwestern Polytechnical University, participated in the competition. Our university’s high-level badminton team sent 13 athletes, such as Yang Haiyong, and four coach members, such as Yang Ning, to participate in team and individual matches for both men and women.
During the men’s team group stage, our school was grouped with two strong opponents, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Jilin University. Despite facing a strong challenge, our athletes and coaches fought fearlessly. With a record of one win and one loss, we advanced to the next round from the group stage. In the following knockout rounds, our men’s badminton team successively defeated China University of Political Science and Law, Tongji University, and South China University of Technology, smoothly entering the top four badminton teams. In the semi-finals, we faced Shanghai Jiaotong University again, whom we had previously met and narrowly lost to with a score of 1:2 in the group stage. Prior to the semi-finals, our coaching team analyzed our opponents carefully, summarizing our experiences, and formulated a highly targeted tactical approach. During the game, our team overcame an unfavorable situation of losing the first game, resolutely implementing the tactics arranged by the coaching team, calmly responding, and fighting bravely to win the next two games, eventually defeating our opponent with a score of 2-1 and advancing to the finals.
In the final on the afternoon of the 27th, our team demonstrated a calm mindset, excellent skills, and tacit cooperation, steadily and firmly winning with a score of 2-0 against the strong opponent, Peking University, once again winning the national championship after a five-year hiatus.
For our university’s high-level men’s badminton team, winning the national championship again was not an easy task. The team had previously won the national men’s team championship twice in 2008 and 2018. After that, they experienced a period of decline, and before the interruption of the competition in 2019 due to the epidemic, they stopped at the top eight. At the 2021 National University Games, the team lost both the men’s singles and doubles gold medals. All of these events caused great setbacks for the team. However, the team did not give up. With the support of the university, the organization of the Physical Education Department, the full commitment of coaches, and the team’s hard training, they persevered and overcame the challenges posed by the pandemic while waiting for an opportunity to rebound. Eventually, they won the Top Ten Model Student Teams of Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2022. The hard work paid off, and in this national championship, which aroused nationwide attention after the epidemic, the team overcame the unfavorable situation of losing the first game, fought courageously and won six consecutive matches to once again win the national championship. The team’s perseverance and fearless fighting spirit on the competition field perfectly embodies the university’s motto of “Loyalty, Integrity, Courage and Perseverance” and carries forward the university’s spirit of “Strong Preparation, Diligent Effort, Practical Attitude, and Creative Innovation”. It is a vivid embodiment of the“Sunshine Health, Striving Upward” sports and cultural atmosphere of Northwestern Polytechnical University in the new era. Once again, the school flag of Northwestern Polytechnical University flies high in the national arena.
