On November 6, 2025, the International College at Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) held the finals of the 2nd “Friendship Cup” Chinese Speech Contest for International Students. Since the competition began in October, it has attracted widespread attention among international students. After a preliminary video-selection round, 19 contestants from 13 countries advanced to the finals.

The contest is divided into three groups—beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Centered on the theme “Setting Sail at NPU, Exploring China Through Practice,” the contestants delivered fluent Chinese speeches sharing their personal “stories of China.” The event drew faculty representatives from the International College Office , the International Student Administration Office, and the Chinese Language Center, along with enthusiastic supporters and a diverse audience who gathered to cheer on the finalists.

The speech performances were full of memorable moments. In the beginner group, Lili from Thailand delivered My Dreams, weaving her journey of growth through three aspirations. In the intermediate group, William from Cameroon began his speech Dreams Across Borders, Setting Sail at NPU with a stirring rendition of NPU’s school song, expressing his determination to pursue his dreams in China. In the advanced group, Chi Zhoujin from Malaysia presented an emotional and insightful speech titled Setting Sail at NPU, Exploring China Through Practice, winning unanimous praise from the judges. The three contestants ultimately claimed the championship titles in their respective groups.

Other contestants also impressed the audience with their remarkable performances. Their speeches reflected a wide range of experiences—from the confusion of newly arriving in China to heartfelt reflections on perseverance and personal growth; from affectionate descriptions of NPU as their “second home” to cultural explorations in the ancient city of Xi’an enabled by the Chinese language. The venue was filled with continuous applause and enthusiastic cheers.

The event also featured a variety of talent performances, Chinese cultural knowledge quizzes, and hands-on cultural activities. Indonesian student Chen Ziyuan, Thai contestants Guan Tingting and Lili, and Vietnamese students Ming Miao, Xiaoling, Yu Ying, and Yu Ye captivated the audience with their musical performances, keeping the atmosphere vibrant and engaging.

During the “Pass-the- Flower” drum game, students eagerly competed to answer questions about Chinese culture, showcasing their cultural knowledge and enthusiasm. The “Calligraphy on Folding Fans” cultural experience also proved highly popular. Participants carefully wrote their favorite classical Chinese verses onto paper fans, sharing their works and engaging in cultural exchange with one another.

The competition concluded with the announcement of first, second, and third prizes for each group, as well as several Outstanding Instructor Awards. The event came to a successful close with a group photo of all the participants, instructors, and organizers.

More than a contest of language proficiency, the “Friendship Cup” Chinese Speech Contest served as a meaningful platform for cultural communication. The International College will continue to create high-quality opportunities for language practice and cultural immersion, helping international students better integrate into campus life and deepen their understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.
