Recently, the 25th Northwestern Polytechnical University Model United Nations Conference (NPUMUN), hosted by the NPU Model United Nations Base, was successfully concluded. A number of international student delegates participated actively and performed exceptionally well, demonstrating excellent global perspectives and comprehensive qualities.

Over the course of the multi-day conference, international students were assigned to different committees, representing various countries to engage in in-depth discussions and negotiations on global issues. In the UN General Assembly Third Committee (UNGA3), delegates deliberated on topics such as the protection of journalists in armed conflicts; in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), representatives conducted multiple rounds of debate on the complex international security challenge of the North Korean nuclear issue; and in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the equity and sustainable pathways of energy transition became the focus of discussion.

Participation in this Model United Nations conference provided international students with a valuable cross-cultural learning experience. MERIEME MOUDDEN from Morocco remarked, “By simulating the roles of delegates from different countries, we gained a deeper understanding of the complexity of international relations and enhanced our ability to communicate and collaborate in a multicultural environment. Alongside our Chinese friends, we not only worked together toward a better world through reaching resolutions, but also built lasting friendships.”

Through intensive discussions of global affairs as well as simulation and practice, international students at the conference strengthened a wide range of skills, including organization, academic writing, management, background research, public speaking, debate, conflict resolution, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and interpersonal communication. The experience laid a solid foundation for their leadership development.
