02.University Overview
Óbuda University is located in Budapest, capital of Hungary. As Hungary’s largest practice-focused engineering and technology university, it is an active member of the European University Association (EUA). Its earliest predecessor was founded in 1410, and the school officially operated as the Royal Hungarian State Higher Industrial School in 1898, boasting a history of more than 600 years. It incorporated three technical colleges in 1999: Bánki Donát Technical College, Kandó Kálmán Technical College and the Light Industry Technical College, and was officially renamed Óbuda University on January 1, 2010.
A dynamically evolving higher education institute in Hungary, Óbuda University enrolls over 15,000 students, making it one of the country’s leading engineering universities. It has received Hungary’s top national education honor and the Higher Education Quality Award. Widely recognized across Hungary and EU member states, the university enjoys remarkable international prestige. Its alumni include numerous distinguished engineers and scientists, most prominently Nobel laureate Professor George Olah, winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, it secured the 4th position among Hungarian universities.
Budapest, the capital of Hungary, sits on the banks of the Danube River. Originally two separate cities facing each other across the river, it expanded over centuries and was formally unified in 1873 by combining Buda and Óbuda on the western bank of the Danube with Pest on the eastern bank. As Hungary’s principal political, commercial and transportation hub as well as its largest city, Budapest ranks the seventh biggest city in the European Union and serves as a key transit hub in Eastern Europe. Known as the "Paris of Eastern Europe" and the "Pearl of the Danube", it boasts its most iconic landmarks along the Danube River. Buda is built on the rocky southern bank while Pest lies on the flat northern plain. On the steep rocky hills of Buda to the west stand the Liberty Statue and the historic Buda Castle.
