VI. Introduction to the Organization and Department
The World Food Programme (WFP) was established in 1961 as the UN’s specialized agency for multilateral food assistance, with its headquarters in Rome, Italy. Focused on food security, WFP helps recipient countries build resilient food systems and eradicate hunger and poverty. It provides emergency food aid in crises such as conflict, disasters and climate change, while driving long-term livelihood improvements through school meal programs and support for smallholder farmers. For its outstanding contributions to fighting hunger and promoting peace, WFP was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.
This internship is offered by the Business Innovation and Change Unit (BIU) under WFP’s Innovation Division. Founded in 2015, BIU serves as WFP’s “management consulting arm”. Its team members bring professional experience from top global consulting firms including McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Reporting directly to WFP’s Executive Director and senior UN leadership, BIU delivers end-to-end solutions covering problem assessment, strategy formulation, advanced data analytics, operational model design and implementation monitoring. Beyond driving internal innovation and transformation at WFP, the unit also provides key project support to other UN agencies such as UN Women.
