Northwestern Polytechnical University Branch Campus in Kazakhstan ("NPU Branch campus" for short) was officially opened on October 12, 2023. The Branch campus was jointly established with Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU). Located in Xi'an, Shaanxi, Northwestern Polytechnical University is a top Chinese engineering university that cultivates talents in aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology engineering. As a national "First-Class" university (A class), NPU ranked 133 according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. KazNU is the largest and best comprehensive university in Kazakhstan, according to 2025 QS World University Rankings it ranked 163.
I. Introduction to Program
Program Level: Ph.D.
Majors: Material Science, Information and Communication Engineering.
Registration time: September of each year.
Duration: 4 years.
General information: Students need to complete all the courses in KazNU, and come to NPU to complete research. Students could get 2 diplomas from each university upon fulfilment of the graduation requirements of both universities.
II. Application
With National Grant (Nationality: Kazakhstan)
Participation in the Kazakhstan State Grant Examination is required. Students are enrolled in the Program automatically if passing the Examination.

D101(Материаловение и технолония), D096(Коммуникации и коммуникационные технологии)
After getting Grant, choose the following educational programs:
8D07120 (Материаловедение и инженерия), 8D06202 (Электроника и коммуникационные технологии)

Tuition: Waive
Accommodation: In Kazakhstan: charged by KazNU or Live off-campus (Self-pay); In NPU: Waive.

VI. Process supervision
1. The whole process of selection and admission will be strictly regulated by the university and follows the principle of openness, fairness, and academic integrity.
2. Any dishonesty that happened during the selection and admission process will lead to admission or studentship cancellation.
3. Disposition of other violations will be per the relevant provisions issued by the Ministry of Education of China.
